So You Were in a Car Accident: Now What?
Even the best drivers may find themselves involved in an automobile accident. So what do you do if this happens to you?
First, get out of harm’s way and obtain care for any injured person.
If you have access to a camera, it is helpful to take photos of the vehicles involved, licence plates, and the intersection or surrounding area where the accident occurred.
If your vehicle is drivable, move it to a safe place. If your vehicle cannot be driven, turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers.
Exchange information with the other driver involved, including name, address, drivers licence number (SGI customer number), and licence plate number. There is no need to inform the other driver whether or not you have extension insurance.
Record the name and contact information of any witnesses to the accident.
Call the police if any of the following apply:
- The accident resulted in an injury or death
- The accident was the result of a hit and run
- You suspect that the other driver is impaired
- The other driver isn’t immediately able to produce a valid driver’s licence
- The other vehicle’s registration is expired
- The other vehicle is from out of province
- If any of the vehicles involved require towing from the scene of the accident
Report the claim to SGI as soon as possible. An adjuster will be assigned to your claim, and if the vehicle is drivable arrangements will be made for you to bring it in to SGI’s claim centre for appraisal of damage. As always, the staff at Farrell Agencies are here to help you navigate the claims process.
