Simple Ways to Give Back During the Holiday Season
Giving back has always been a core value at Farrell Agencies. During the year, Farrell Agencies and Westland Insurance have provided extensive financial support and countless volunteer hours to numerous local groups and organizations.
We have teamed up with several community groups such as the Yorkton Kinsmen Club, Yorkton Lions Club and the Society for the Involvement of Good Neighbors to support local programs and help families in need. This year we sponsored the Yorkton Festival of Cultures put on by the East Central Newcomer Welcome Centre Inc. – an organization that helped over 400 new immigrants feel welcome to our region in 2019.
Farrell Agencies also sponsored many local education and sports programs such as the Yorkton Regional High School and Sacred Heart High School Student and Saint of the Month award as well as attendance awards for Stoughton Central School. We have provided school scholarships like the YRHS Most Dedicated Gridder and Parkland College Dollars for Scholars and we are also a major sponsor of the Canadian Student Leadership Conference, which will be held in Yorkton in 2020.
During the Christmas season, Farrell Agencies has supported the Operation Christmas Child program. Through this program, local residents can help struggling children in the developing world by filling shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items, school supplies, and other items.
We recognize that individuals or families may not be able to support charities or local organizations in the same capacity, but there are many simple ways in which you can give back during the holiday seasons:
1. Contribute to the Food Bank
For many families, money can be tight at this time of year. Gather non-perishable food items, blankets or unwanted clothes and deliver them to the Salvation Army. Even if you only help to keep one extra person warm and fed this Christmas, it will make a big difference.
2. Spend time with A Senior
Christmas can be a lonely time for many, especially the elderly. Consider dropping by a local retirement or nursing home with some delicious Christmas goodies. Or simply visit an elderly neighbour and share a hot cup of coffee or cocoa.
3. Donate a Hamper
There are many underprivileged families that go without at Christmas time. Fill a hamper with all the food needed for a perfect Christmas dinner, along with a special toy or book and deliver to a family in need. Many schools and churches can connect you with families that could use some extra support.
4. Support a Local Fundraiser
Find out which local charities or organizations are hosting fundraisers during the holiday season. Pick one that means something to your family and support it as a participant, volunteer or donating goods and/or cash.
5. Give the Gift of Time
The most giving thing that you can do this Christmas is to give your time. Take a few hours out of your week to volunteer your time at a soup kitchen, shovelling your neighbour’s walk, visiting someone who is alone or helping out at a local organization in need. Your time really is the most valuable gift that you can give.
