Insurance Tip of the Week #2 – Peace of Mind: Insurance Advice

Travel Medical Insurance

Posted by Farrell Agencies on July 27, 2017

Now that the weather is warming up, many of us find our thoughts turning to the upcoming summer holidays! In addition to all the preparations associated with planning a summer getaway, one often overlooked step is the purchase of travel medical insurance.

Travel medical insurance can help protect you and your family from unexpected costs that may arise out of a medical emergency that occurs while travelling outside of Saskatchewan. While many consider travel health insurance to be an needless expense, not having it can end up costing you far more. The protection afforded by the provincial health plan only covers a fraction of healthcare expenses incurred outside of Canada, and often limits coverage when travelling to other provinces and territories within the country. Unless you purchase travel medical insurance, you are personally responsible for medical expenses not covered by Saskatchewan Health when you travel outside the province which can be costly. Thankfully, travel medical insurance can be easily obtained from your insurance broker at a relatively low cost.

As most travel plans exclude pre-existing conditions, a medical questionnaire is often required prior to a policy being issued. In addition, injuries that occur while partaking in certain high-risk activities (such as bungee jumping, sky diving, or mountain climbing) may not be covered by your insurer. We recommend that you review the “Exclusions and Limitations” section of your travel plan before you leave on your trip to make sure you understand what is and is not covered by your policy.

As always, give us a call or stop by and chat if you have any questions or concerns about your situation.

Happy travels!
